The West Elk Bicycle Classic starts at the Western State Colorado University Campus in Gunnison CO in front of Taylor hall at 7:00am on Sunday of Labor day weekend. The route heads west on Highway 50 out of Gunnison to Blue Mesa dam. You will be in a large peloton averaging probably 25-30mph. Be careful and hold your line! At the dam you begin a magical ascent along the north rim of Black Canyon of the Gunnison. This road twists and turns along the awesome canyon and as it is so twisty you will probably not see a car other than our SAGs and medical support. Once you reach the top of this area you quickly descend to the tiny town of Crawford and then ride past beautiful orchards and rock formations to Paonia. Warning!! The railroad tracks just before Paonia have a
nasty lip and angle across the road. Many local riders have destroyed
their tires here. Please slow down and DO NOT try to go fast over these.
They will be well marked with a marshal.
Now the real fun begins. You have a 5400' climb to the top of Kebler pass. Don't worry it gets worse. The road gives away to dirt for another 25 miles of climbing. Your finish time will be at the top of the pass with a easy coast on partially paved roads to Crested Butte for the official finish and the after party.
Check out the maps below for the start locations and route.
Warning!! The first set of rail road tracks, just before Paonia, have a nasty lip and angle across the road. Many local riders have destroyed their tires here. Please slow down and DO NOT try to go fast over these. They will be well marked.
